The impact of hydraulic oil spills on the aquatic environment
The incidents of oil spills are always a major concern for the environment, as they cause harm to both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Today, we will explore the direct and indirect impacts of hydraulic oil spills on the aquatic environment.
The Current Situation and Statistics on Marine Pollution in Vietnam
Vietnam’s maritime region, connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans, serves as a major maritime route with a substantial flow of vessels, 70% of which are oil tankers. However, from 1989 to the present, there have been approximately 100 incidents of oil spills in Vietnam’s waters resulting from ship accidents. These accidents have released varying amounts of oil into the sea, ranging from tens to hundreds of tons.
Numerous studies and statistics highlight that oil spill incidents have severe consequences for the marine environment, particularly affecting ecosystems such as coastal habitats, seaweed, mangrove forests, aquatic and marine species, tourism, and recreational activities.

The Impact of Hydraulic Oil Spills on the Aquatic Environment
Oil spills from hydraulic systems lead to marine environmental pollution, significantly affecting various ecosystems. Particularly vulnerable are mangrove ecosystems, seagrass beds, tidal flats, marshes, and coral reefs. Oil pollution reduces the resilience, flexibility, and recovery capacity of these ecosystems. Elevated oil levels in the water create oil films that hinder the exchange of oxygen between the air and water, disrupting the ecological oxygen balance.
A concerning aspect is the spread of oil on the sea and its prolonged presence on the shore, if not properly collected. This can result in a decline in the population of aquatic organisms, causing damage to the fishing and aquaculture industries. Oil pollution in the water environment leads to mass fish deaths due to insufficient dissolved oxygen. Oil adhering to land, rocks, and coastal areas disrupts the aesthetic appeal, causing unpleasant odors and significant losses in the tourism sector. Oil spills also impact the operations of fishing ports, shipbuilding and repair facilities, damaging machinery, equipment, and transportation infrastructure for resource extraction through waterways.
